Since both of these movies go hand in hand, Disney decided to release them together as a 2 disc set, and I’m glad they did. John Lasseter and company at Pixar Studios made two of my most beloved films ever, and groundbreaking too. The first time I saw Toy Story in the theatre, the computer animation just blew my socks off. These are one of those rare breed of film that both adults and children can enjoy watching together.
Whats not to love about a bunch of toys coming to life behind the scenes in Andy’s room? It brings me back to my childhood playing around with the very same toys we see in the film. The cast of characters in both films are great, and the real actors behind them fit into them so well. The detail that the animators went through to show the emotions and mannerisms of each character is simply astounding, you just don’t see it as well in traditional animation as far as I have seen.
Since these are completely digital films, it fits right in on the DVD format. You would think they developed this media just for films like these. The picture is absolutely crisp and clean, and the sound is flawless. They really utilize the surround sound system well. I don’t see any flaws anywhere. When I demonstrate my Panasonic Digital TV for someone, I pull out this film first.
The additional features included on these films are nice. They put both shorts that ran in front of the feature in the movies, Tin Toy and Luxo Jr., a really great bonus. The Toy Story disc is a little light on extras, but with both of these discs together, there is plenty for all. The Toy Story 2 disc also gives you the option to watch full screen or wide. The outtakes that showed in the credits in the theatre has been separated from the movie, so you can just go straight to them if you want.
These movies are the ones you want to pull out and watch again and again. One of those feel good warm fuzzy kinda films that make you wish you were a kid again. A definite must for the collection.
