Wow, what can you say about this movie. I remember the first time I saw this film a few years ago I couldn’t believe how great this flick was and it was so simply made! The story, editing, music and dialogue made this one hell of a flick. Oh, and lets not forget the Quentin style ultraviolence that tends to show up in here as well. With the amount of fake blood packets they used, it was probably the largest portion of the budget.
Quentin had one thing in mind when setting out to make this movie, that it would be his movie and no one else’s. What I love the best about his style is the character interaction, that’s all this film predominately revolves around. He was able to assemble a great bunch of actors, stick them in a room and have them go at each other.
The stand out performances are definitely Mr. Pink (Steve Buscemi), Mr. White (Harvey Keitel) and Mr. Blonde (Michael Madsen), although the rest of the cast is great as well. Quentin gave these actors a lot to work with here, and you can see bits of each actors personality come through into the characters. They all ooze testosterone and each one thinks they are the top dog, in a group full of top dogs. “Are you gonna bark all day, little doggy, or are you gonna bite? ” Nobody can keep these guys on a leash, it feels like someone at anytime is gonna go off the deep end and wipe everyone else out.
So, here we are 10 years later, and Artisan puts out a special edition DVD worthy of the quality of this film. Not just one, but 4 different covers to choose from. There is a ton of extra material on these discs, and they both have different things on them so each disc is not the same. I found the menus were a little strange to navigate on the widescreen disc compared to the full screen, but once I figured it out it went a lot easier. The sound a picture are excellent and show no degradation at all from an older film such as this one.
Overall, this is a must have for any Quentin Tarantino fan, some of his best work.
