Ahoy mate! The third installment of the ever so popular blockbuster Pirates franchise has made it on shore to DVD. Argh, may ye endure all this pirate talk it may get on ones nerves, yargh. I’m sorry I just can’t help myself! I keep thinking of the Sea Captain character on the Simpsons too so that doesn’t help. So, here it lies, the final chapter (maybe) of the movie series based on a theme park ride. If you missed the second film, you may want to stop and watch that one first. The story continues right from the end of Dead Man’s Chest, so if you haven’t seen that one you might be a tad lost in the beginning. Uh, meaning me! Sorry I haven’t seen it yet, I’m working to correct that. At any rate I really like the first Pirate film and thought it was great, so naturally they upped the ante and this one provides more bang for the buck.

The film does take on an even darker tone more than the original, I wouldn’t let a young kid watch it with the opening scene being a lot of people hung at the gallows. The films all have a supernatural element to them, and this one gets even more bizarre with Jack Sparrows hallucinations while stuck in Davey Jones Locker. Its funny, but odd. Visually the film is stunning, the action almost non stop. By the end it seemed it could go no further over the top almost to the point of absurdity. You know these guys were taking the pirate thing as far as it would go, man that looked like a lot of fun.

This installment is certainly chaotic, with the overload of characters and sub plots it almost starts becoming a chore keeping track of everything. I’ve heard from others the second film is long in some portions, and this one is also very long. But the script is nicely balanced so there aren’t many lulls. Besides, you get to feast your eyes on all the rich set pieces and wonderful sets.

Oh and of course the highlight of the film is the cameo of Keith Richards playing Jack’s dad. Hey, he’s a natural, naturally preserved maybe. It didn’t take much to make him look the part. I must add though, that moment does take a bit away from the immersion factor because it immediately registers that it is in fact Keith Richards in a pirate hat. Everyone wanted to see this since the first film, meh. Nice on paper, not in reality. It was a cute scene though I will say.

Naturally, the film is technically fantastic with excellent image and sound. All the best of modern film making, hey they spent enough cash on it so it better look good. The two disc edition of the film is of course packed to the gills with all kinds of goodies. There are lengthy featurettes covering all aspects of the film from start to finish. Given the length of the film already there is enough additional stuff to keep one occupied for quite some time. But, me likey!
