Plot: After surviving an unexpected attack in enemy territory, jet-setting industrialist Tony Stark builds a high-tech suit of armor and vows to protect the world as Iron Man. Straight from the pages of the legendary comic book, Iron Man is a hero who is built – not born – to be unlike any other!

Fan boys rejoice! Iron Man is finally out on DVD, arguably one of the best comic book to film adaptations to date from the Marvel camp. Joining the ranks of Spider-Man and X-men, Jon Favreau’s lovingly crafted roller coaster ride of a film is one of the summer of 2008’s best tent pole releases. You know it helps when everyone involved is a fan of the source material, and any Hollywood bastardization kept to a minimum. Of course this is Marvel’s first attempt at creating a movie on its own with no outside interference so that was probably a huge factor. So, Iron Man as a movie is awesome, there I said it pure and simple. Its friggin cool and the whole thing just works. I have very few complaints, except for maybe a better super villain could have been involved but that can be overlooked as this is an origin story. When does the sequel come out? I want to see more!

Iron Man has the perfect blend of great characters and dialogue, the right amount of humor, special effects, a rocking soundtrack and a decent story line to entertain you all the way from start to finish. The film has just the right mixture of action sequences and scenes that allow us to get a lot of the back story and time to invest emotionally with Tony Stark and company, and the cheese factor is very minimal if at all present.  Jon even put in some nuggets for the hardcore fans while keeping those in the audience who don’t know much about Iron Man up to speed in a hurry. I just want to know if any of those cool computer systems Tony Stark uses are real, I want my own JARVIS, and the Mark III suit.  IronMan_Still_PK_14077Rv2

Putting aside all those film elements, the storyline, the special effects, what have you, without good actors this film would fall flat. What makes this movie tick and put it up a notch over the rest is the cast. Robert Downey jr. could not be a more perfect fit for the title role as the womanizing, boozing, billionaire industrialist turned good guy Tony Stark. He is just fantastic and owns this movie. His interactions with others, jokes, and just the right amount of ego make him very entertaining to watch. He’s such a cocky smartass, how could you not like this guy even though he needs a leash and can be uncontrollable.  Even his interactions with his garage robots is hilarious. Whenever Stark is not on screen, it starts to get sorta boring frankly.

The rest of the cast interacts with this character the way one herds cats. Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow), Jim Rhodes (Terence Howard) and even Obadiah Stane (Jeff Bridges in beard form) all cannot keep this man in check, or do so very poorly. They can only chase after him like trying to catch a dog running down a car in the street. Tony is the maverick at the center of attention, and because of Downey’s performance they all come to this movie with their A game faces.  My only complaint is possibly Jeff Bridges, and it could be because I am not used to seeing him in a bad guy role. He may have been weakest link out of the bunch.

On the technical end of things, this DVD is top flight in my book. The sound and image quality are of course top notch, and best viewed on a large screen. This 2 disc set also comes filled with lots of extras, and rightly so. Watching the deleted scenes, and there are quite few, made me wish some of those could have been put back in to flesh out the movie even more. I know its already long at 2 hours, but whats a few more minutes? This stuff was good! Naturally, the second disc is filled with a detailed look at the production of the film from start to finish with many major parts of the film getting a detailed look. So much material once could easily spend 2 hours watching them alone.  The only thing missing would be a digital version of the film, which would be the icing on the cake for me.

So, in short, Iron Man kicks butt. Loved it!
