HD-DVD is not finished…yet

“Bring out your dead! [clang] Bring out your dead! [clang] Bring out your dead! [clang]“

As mentioned previously and all over the net, the hits just keep on coming for our friends in HD-DVD land. Now according to reports (via Techdirt), Toshiba is planning to plunk down $2.7 million for a 30 second spot during the Super Bowl this weekend. To me this smacks of desperation on Toshiba’s end, is this the final ploy that will make or break the format? In the minds of many on the internetz, Blu-Ray has won already, what with Warners, New Line, HBO abandoning the format as well as rumors of Universal’s contract also about to expire. Blu-Ray sales are far outpacing HD-DVD despite the price cuts, even Woolworths has seen the writing on the wall and is going Blu-Ray only. So come on guys, I know it was a huge investment to win this thing, but come on lets end this war before the rise on online distribution models takes hold.

So, in the immortal words from Monty Python and The Holy Grail

“I’m not dead!
Ere he says he’s not dead.
Yes he is.
I’m not!
Well, he will be soon. He’s very ill.
I’m getting better!
No, you’re not. You’ll be stone dead in a moment.
Oh, I can’t take him like that. It’s against regulations.
I don’t want to go on the cart!
Oh, don’t be such a baby.”
