New Line Cinema is no more!

Well, I suppose this isn’t a huge surprise, but according to /Film, Warner Bros. is going to absorb the studio into its operations and make it just a business unit. They were always tied at the hip, but I guess after a string of failures (The Golden Compass anyone?) at the box office something had to give. Co-CEo’s Bob Shaye and Michael Lynne will be stepping down as studio chiefs and the back office will be consolidated with Warners. Well, at least now they can concentrate on making better products like *cough* The Hobbit *cough* perhaps? It actually kind of saddens me, they did take some huge gambles in the past with films like Lord Of The Rings and the like. I suppose their luck ran out.

Alien Vs. Predator Requiem

I know I’m a little late on this one, hey I was busy! Fox will release the next installment of the Alien Vs. Predator franchise on April 15th in Blu-ray and two disc DVD formats in a EXTREME Unrated package. Gotta love those marketing guys, always finding ways to put schlocky films in a better light. Anyway, these sets will be priced at $34.98 SRP for the DVD and $39.98 SRP in Blu. Both of these sets will also include the digital version of the film as well for your portable viewing pleasure.

24 Season 1 Special Edition

Fox has announced it will release a new version of 24 to DVD on May 20th. Besides the nifty tin package, this 7 DVD set will be stocked with all kinds of goodies. You’ll be able to get this guy for about $59.98 SRP. For those of you (like me) who missed the boat and never got into the show this may be a good place to start with. So get ready to see Jack Bauer kick some ass all over again.

Lars And The Real Girl

MGM is releasing this film to DVD on April 15th. The film that stars Ryan Gosling about a “misguided but innocent guy who thinks he has found true love with a blow-up doll. ” And this movie is a nominee for Best Screenplay this year? A comedy about a man and his plastic girlfriend? Wow, okay then. So, for those of you interested you can pick this up for around $27.98 SRP or I’m guessing much less.

The war is over Toshiba pulling the plug on HD DVD

Posted on Engadget today, and various other internet sources..Japan’s NHK has followed up The Hollywood Reporter’s earlier indications Toshiba was ready to dump its money-losing HD DVD business, with news that the company is prepared to cease manufacturing software and hardware, at a loss of hundreds of millions of dollars. This caps the worst week ever for red, when HD DVD was dumped by Netflix and Wal-mart. Well now, this was surprisingly quick. Finally!

Netflix pours salt into HD-DVD wounds

Fresh from getting its arse kicked by Blu-ray last month, the hits still keep on coming. DVD rental service Netflix has just announced that it will no longer stock HD-DVD’s in its lineup. “Netflix said that with such a clear signal from the industry, it will only buy Blu-ray discs going forward and will phase out stock of HD DVD by about the end of the year.” Ouch. That’s one way to close the gates on some one, limit the choices at the store level! Hmmm, this thing may be over sooner rather than later. Look at all those cheap HD-DVD players out there. Sorry guys, ain’t gonna happen.
